My qualification questionnaire wants to know what my occupation is. I'm going with "Mother."
Apparently I could get myself exempted if I were "essential to the care of [an] aged or infirm person." Being essential to the care of a non-aged-or-infirm person who cannot feed, clean, or protect himself from his own suicidal impulses, to say nothing of his only slightly more competent siblings, doesn't count for anything. So I guess I'm going to have to make my case as "a person [for] whom jury service would constitute a severe hardship." My husband advises that I also attempt a preemptive strike by letting them know up front that I believe in jury nullification.
Maybe the politically incorrect demographic info I'm putting up here will be enough to get me out of it anyway.

I was called up each of the three years we lived in Ft. Wayne while DH was at Seminary. It was ridiculous. Ft. Wayne also called me up the year we were on vicarage - I got out of that one pretty easily. Anyway, I got out of it twice as a nursing mother and the one time I had to show up, I was dismissed in the first round of selection. Not entirely sure why; it might have had something to do with my enormously pregnant belly, but I don't know for sure.
Voir dire! Cool guhvuhmint.
I've gotten called 4 out of the last 5 years. Most recently, I was dismissed even though I told them that I was willing to serve, I just needed 3 thirty minute pumping breaks at specific times. :D
Before that, I was excused after revealing my belief that no one deserves to get rich off of someone else's honest mistake.
I have a couple of friends that get called (and chosen) pretty regularly and think it's a great time - but the pay stinks.
Wow. Buena suerte with that!
Completely unrelated question: Why is my bubble baby so much fatter than yours?!
Up here in Crooked County they will excuse you for being a stay-at-home mother with small children. It doesn't say that on the form but a call to the jury administrator confirmed it. All I had to do was write a letter. Hope it's an easy out for you too!
A friend once got jury duty after birthing a premature son. She pleaded her case ont he phone and in writing, but the asinine judge was totally unsympathetic. So, she pumped her guts out and left the baby with her mom.
If that had happened to me post-partum, I probably would have ended up in jail. And if I ever get called to duty wtih a baby, I think I'll pull a MooreMama and request pumping breaks. That's brilliant.
I too got multiple calls while nursing all 13 of my babies. I wrote a letter and said the baby was totally nursing and did not take a bottle because they did not. (We never owned a bottle during the entire baby time) I offered if the nursing baby could come along with me because he/she would need to be fed I would be happy to serve. I always got a letter of excuse.
Debbie
Debbie, nice! :D Shrew, not nice. >:( But thanks for the reports all around; I've never been pursued before. I'm home free in two months and I hope either the belly or my personal views will get me out if I'm called before then.
I just got called last month and felt the same way. But, they gave me a number that was never called, for the inconvenience of setting up potential last minute child care, it was a rough three weeks.
