So there.

I've smelled some smelly smells in my day, but I don't know if anything beats a rotten potato.

I've never smelled a rotten potato, but leftover beans found months later in a tupperware container in the back of your fridge? (shudder)
Take my advice: throw the entire container away out WITHOUT OPENING it!

Dead mouse. I will grant you though that rotten potato ranks right up there.

Why, yes, something does beat a rotten potato--a whole bag of rotten potatoes left in a classroom over Christmas break. Trust me. (A close second would be an open little carton of milk left in a locker over Christmas break. And a dead mouse.)

when we'd dig potatoes in the fall, sometimes we would find the seed potatoes and throw them at each other. because they smelled so bad. and were at least that slimy.

Oh! I know the answer to this one!

The answer is: EVERYTHING SMELLS LIKE POOP.

Leah must be my long lost twin or something. About 5 weeks ago we had friends over for fajitas. Just this past Saturday I found the leftover beans. She's right--just throw out the whole container! It ranks up there with a dead mouse.

I've had some dead mouse in my life (discovered because it smelled like poop), but somehow the potato offends me more. Maybe because it's so unexpected.

I had quite a few rotten potatoes in my kitchen, left over from our last visit in Christmas '08. The guy living here didn't cook and probably didn't know they were even there. Dried roots everywhere and lots of mush. Have also found dead mice in the sticky traps by following my nose to behind the frig or under the stove.

The cousins were introduced to the wonderful aroma of skunk for the first time this summer. They're very glad they don't have any in Lebanon.

We just came back from a 2 week vacation and did we have rotten potatoes in our pantry. I think there was still some in the garbage. I had to get it out (it must have been a napkin that our son was cleaning his hand on after he cleaned up the potatoes for us.)
