Marriage: another definition

...there are no words to express the abyss between isolation and having one ally. It may be conceded to the mathematician that four is twice two. But two is not twice one; two is two thousand times one. That is why, in spite of a hundred disadvantages, the world will always return to monogamy.

Is this from that book that I wanted to read and then lost the title of? And if so, what's the title?

It's originally from The Man Who Was Thursday--and I haven't actually read that one yet, just came across the quote elsewhere. Cheating, I know.

After I posted, I was reflecting that it's too bad the world seems to think that serial monogamy will do the trick. Though obviously it's not making people happy.
