Marriage defined

Although we who blog here have graciously been spared this dilemma, I liked this line from the article: "Marriage isn’t a passion-fest; it’s more like a partnership formed to run a very small, mundane, and often boring nonprofit business."

It makes me think of "Fiddler on the Roof", where Tevye and Golde explain that they didn't quite like each other when they first married, but grew to love each other. Lots of that kind of history in arranged marriages, I'm sure.

I admire the author's honesty in admitting that the single-mom-now, meet-Mr. Right-later decision wasn't all she thought it would be. Too often we (at least I) make the not-greatest decision and then feel like we have to pretend it's the greatest thing ever because we're unwilling to admit we could've been wrong.

Kelly: I was thinking of that scene, too!

We regularly intone to our kids and our unmarried friends that marriage is all about choosing to "love the one you're with," and to work hard at doing those things necessary to make your spouse feel valuable and loved. Which, thanks be to God, often makes for many wonderful years and many little children.
